"Robots are people too" - Camp Peavey, Robomagellan judge
There were 14 other robots registered to compete in the event. However, not all the robots made it to competition, and only Zippy, Intrepid, A3, Guru, and Marauder touched the final cone.
Intrepid
This robot tied Zippy for 1st place. It was behind for the first two runs, but managed to tie Zippy's best time on its third run. Its focus was obstacle avoidance rather than speed, making it capable of navigating through a dense forest. However, the competition was held on an open field, so speed mattered more than obstacle avoidance.
A3
A3 is a third generation RoboMagellan robot. It came in second place this year (2008), behind Zippy and Intrepid. It got stuck at an obstacle on its first couple runs, and scored its best time on its third run. It got to the first and second bonus cones in only 3 minutes. It had to get to the last cone in less than 2.5 minutes to take first place. Unfortunately for A3, it missed the final cone and had to search for it, which took a while.
GURU
We saw this team out on the field the day before competition getting ready for the event. GURU managed to get to the final cone and touch it, which put it in third place (2008).
Marauder
This menacing robot was built by a team from Canada. A couple days before competition, this robot's cone detection laser stopped functioning. It's parents did a quick fix to make the robot scan back and forth across a patch of field where the cone should be in order to increase the chances of touching the cone. It ended up working out for Marauder when the robot touched the final cone. However, it didn't touch either of the bonus cones, putting it behind Zippy, Intrepid, A3 and Guru.
Cataglyphis bicolor
The father of this robot is a sophomore in high school who we met the day before competition on the practice field. He was having problems getting his CMU-cam 1 to detect the orange cone in different lighting. Due to a problem with his GPS the day of competition, he didn't end up participating. However, he did win the firefighter competition at RoboGames. He has a website here which shows some of his other projects. We are looking forward to seeing him again in the future.
Red Dwarf 1
This robot was having problems with a CPU overload the day of competition. The robot would jump forward, stop, then jump forward again. Apparently, the CPU that the team had been using fried, and the new CPU they put on was not capable of doing all the processing required by the robot. I saw their robot move smoothly later on in the day; however, it ended up just going in circles.
OLPR
This was one of the most inspired robot designs that I have come across. I was really looking forward to seeing it run when I looked at the pictures in Builders Database, however this robot never did. The creator said that he ran out of time to work on it, which caused him not to run.
